SILENT CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord our God,

you call us to work for a world where all will be fed and have dignity, but we find ourselves distracted by our own desires. You call us to seek justice and peace, but we are satisfied with injustice and discord. You call us to bring liberty to the oppressed, but we do not insist on freedom for all. Forgive us, O Lord. Turn us to your will by the power of your Spirit, so that all may know your justice and peace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior.

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

1st SCRIPTURE                     Mark 9:30-37

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.” But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him. Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

2nd SCRIPTURE                           Psalm 1

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;

but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON     “Frame of Reference”      CP Ford Dieth

 RESPONSE

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH         Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,  and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

✝HYMN [GTG#749]  Come! Live in the Light! (We Are Called)

Come! Live in the light! Shine with the joy

and the love of the Lord! We are called

 to be light for the kingdom, to live in the freedom

 of the city of God.

Chorus:

We are called to act with justice;

 we are called to love tenderly;

 we are called to serve one another,

 to walk humbly with God.

Come! Open your heart! Show your mercy

to all those in fear! We are called to be hope for the hopeless

 so hatred and violence will be no more.

Chorus

Sing! Sing a new song! Sing of that great day

when all will be one! God will reign, and we’ll walk with each other

 as sisters and brothers united in love.

Chorus

PARTING PRAYER

Fill us with your holy love, O Lord, and open the treasures of your wisdom to us. You alone know all that we desire. So perfect what you have begun in us, and answer the prayers you instill in us

through the stirring of your Holy Spirit. Even as we seek your face,

turn to us and show us your glory. Then our longing will be satisfied, and our peace will be complete. Amen.

✝RESPONSE [GTG#765] May the God of Hope Go with Us/Canto de esperanza

ENGLISH:

May the God of hope go with us every day, filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.

May the God of justice speed us on our way,

bringing light and hope to every land and race.

Praying, let us work for peace; singing, share our joy with all;

working for a world that’s new, faithful when we hear Christ’s call.
