GATHERING

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN [Blue #464]     Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

1 Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,

God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,

Opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Drive the gloom of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day.

2 All Thy works with joy surround Thee,

Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around Thee,

Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

Flowery meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird and flowing fountain,

Call us to rejoice in Thee.

3 Mortals, join the happy chorus

Which the morning stars began;

Love divine is reigning o’er us,

Joining all in heaven’s plan.

Ever singing, march we onward,

Victors in the midst of strife,

Joyful music leads us sunward

In the triumph song of life.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God,

light of the minds that know you,

life of the souls that love you,

strength of the thoughts that seek you:

Help us so to know you

that we may truly love you,

so to love you

that we may fully serve you,

whose service is perfect freedom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

HYMN        “Will You Come and Follow Me?”      KELVINGROVE

  1. “Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?

Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,

will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

  1. Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

  1. Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?

Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?

Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen,

and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

  1. Will you love the “you” you hide if I but call your name?

Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?

Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around,

through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

  1. Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.

Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.

In Your company I’ll go where Your love and footsteps show.

Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN

 CONFESSION

CALL TO CONFESSION

SILENT CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, our judge and redeemer, we confess that we have tried to hide from you, for we have done wrong. We have lived for ourselves, and apart from you. We have turned from our neighbors, and refused to bear the burdens of others. We have ignored the pain of the world, and passed by the hungry, the poor, and the oppressed.

In your great mercy forgive our sins and free us from selfishness, that we may choose your will and obey your commandments; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GLORIA PATRI #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end, Amen, Amen.

PROCLAMATION

SCRIPTURE LESSON                                           Ephesians 6:1-18

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—this is the first commandment with a promise: ‘so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.’

And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ; not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free.

And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet, put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON                   SEEKING THE TRUTH                   Patricia Ellzey

 RESPONSE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH     Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

RECEIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY

*DOXOLOGY

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures here below;

Praise God above, ye heavenly hosts;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

*HYMN [Blue #383]      My Faith Looks Up to Thee

1 My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine: Now hear me while I pray,

Take all my guilt away, O let me from this day

Be wholly Thine!

2 May Thy rich grace impart Strength to my fainting heart,

My zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me,

O may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be,

A living fire!

3 While life’s dark maze I tread, And griefs around me spread,

Be Thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away, Nor let me ever stray

From Thee aside.

4 When ends life’s transient dream,

When death’s cold sullen stream Shall o’er me roll.

Blest Savior, then, in love, Fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above, A ransomed soul!

*PARTING PRAYER

Holy Spirit, you have filled us with your life.

Christ our Savior, you have embraced us in your love.

God our Mother, you have fed us with your grace.

Now send us out into your beloved world

to share your life, your love, your grace with all.

Blessing and honor and glory to you,

holy, holy, holy Lord. Amen.

PROCLAMATION

LESSON                                                       Genesis 1:26-2:4a

Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’

So God created humankind in his image,

   in the image of God he created them;

   male and female he created them.

God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

*HYMN [Blue #434]  Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples

Today we are all called to be

Disciples of the Lord,

To help to set the captive free,

Make plow-share out of sword,

To feed the hungry, quench their thirst,

Make love and peace our fast,

To serve the poor and homeless first,

Our ease and comfort last.

God made the world and at its birth

Ordained our human race

To live as stewards of the earth,

Responding to God’s grace.

But we are vain and sadly proud,

We sow not peace but strife,

Our discord spreads a deadly cloud

That threatens all of life.

Pray justice may come rolling down

As in a mighty stream,

With righteousness in field and town

To cleanse us and redeem.

For God is longing to restore

An earth where conflicts cease,

A world that was created for

A harmony of peace.

May we in service to our God

Act out the living word,

And walk the road the saints have trod

Till all have seen and heard.

As stewards of the earth may we

Give thanks in one accord

To God who calls us all to be

Disciples of the Lord.

*PARTING PRAYER

Holy Spirit, you have filled us with your life.

Christ our Savior, you have embraced us in your love.

God our Mother, you have fed us with your grace.

Now send us out into your beloved world

holy, holy, holy Lord. Amen.

Amen.

DECLARATION of FORGIVENESS

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Thanks be to God!

PROCLAMATION

LESSON                                                                             Genesis 1:1-25

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
And God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.’ So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
And God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, ‘Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.’ And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so. God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
And God said, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.’ So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’ And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
And God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.’ And it was so. God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good.

 RESPONSE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Brief Statement of Faith:

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, Fully human, fully God.

Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image …, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments, we violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church.

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Gracious Father, giver of all good things: For our home on earth and for your unfailing mercy,

We give you thanks.

Christ, our redeemer: For your sacrifice on the cross and rising from death that we might live,
We give you thanks and praise.

Holy Spirit, giver of life: For your abiding presence in our lives and for comforting and guiding us,

We give you thanks, praise, and glory.

O triune God: To you be glory and praise now and forever. Amen

Amen.

*HYMN [#138]  “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty” NICAEA

1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,

casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

who wert and art, and evermore shalt be.

3 Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,

though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,

only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,

perfect in pow’r, in love and purity.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

GATHERING

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN (From the Blue Hymnal #434)

“Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples”                      KINGSFOLD
1. Today we are all called to be Disciples of the Lord,
To help to set the captives free, make plow-share out of sword,
To feed the hungry, quench their thirst, make love and peace our fast,
To serve the poor and homeless first, our ease and comfort last.

2. God made the world and at its birth ordained our human race
To live as stewards of the earth, responding to God’s grace.
But we are vain and sadly proud, we sow not peace but strife,
Our discord spreads a deadly cloud That threatens all of life.

3. Pray justice may come rolling down as in a mighty stream,
With righteousness in field and town to cleanse us and redeem.
For God is longing to restore an earth where conflicts cease,
A world that was created for a harmony of peace.

4.May we in service to our God act out the living word,
And walk the road the saints have trod till all have seen and heard.
As stewards of the earth may we give thanks in one accord
To God who calls us all to be Disciples of the Lord.

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON                                       Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN

SECOND LESSON                                                            Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON                     “Representation”                 Rev. Aaron Ochart

 RESPONSE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH        “Credo”           by Jane Marshall

*NICENE CREED

Amen.

CELEBRATION of the LORD’S SUPPER

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

…who sing to the glory of your name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

…According to Christ’s Commandment:

We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

HYMN 319                    “Spirit”

Chorus: Spirit Spirit of gentleness Blow through the wilderness

Calling and free, Spirit Spirit of restlessness

Stir me from placidness Wind wind on the sea

  1. You moved on the waters You called to the deep

Then You coaxed up the mountains From the valleys of sleep

And over the eons You called to each thing

Awake from your slumbers And rise on your wings

  1. You swept through the desert You stung with the sand

And You goaded Your people With a law and a land

And when they were blinded With their idols and lies

Then You spoke through Your prophets To open their eyes

3.You sang in a stable You cried from a hill

Then You whispered in silence When the whole world was still

And down in the city You called once again

When You blew through Your people On the rush of the wind

4.You call from tomorrow You break ancient schemes

From the bondage of sorrow The captives dream dreams

Our women see visions Our men clear their eyes

With bold new decisions Your people arise

Convict us, convert us, consecrate us, until we are set free from the service of ourselves, to be your servants to the world. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, in raising Jesus from the grave, you shattered the power of sin and death. We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We overlook the poor and the hungry, and pass by those who mourn; we are deaf to the cries of the oppressed, and indifferent to calls for peace; we despise the weak, and abuse the earth you made.

Forgive us, God of mercy. Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. Amen.

FIRST LESSON                                                              John 13:12-20

After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But it is to fulfill the scripture, “The one who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.” I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am he. Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.’

ANTHEM                In Christ Alone

SECOND LESSON                                              Philippians 2:1-13

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,

   did not regard equality with God

   as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself,

   taking the form of a slave,

   being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

   he humbled himself

   and became obedient to the point of death—

   even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him

   and gave him the name

   that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus

   every knee should bend,

   in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue should confess

   that Jesus Christ is Lord,

   to the glory of God the Father.

Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

RECEPTION of NEW MEMBERS

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH         Confession of 1967 9.53-9.56

God’s redeeming work in Jesus Christ embraces the whole of [hu]man’s life: social and cultural, economic and political, scientific and technological, individual and corporate. It includes [hu]man’s natural environment as exploited and despoiled by sin. It is the will of God that [God’s] purpose for human life shall be fulfilled under the rule of Christ and all evil be banished from [God’s] creation… With an urgency born of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth, nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope, the church looks beyond all partial achievement to the final triumph of God. “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

RECEIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY

*DOXOLOGY

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Praise God, in Jesus fully known:

Creator, Word, and Spirit one.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Amen.

*HYMN [Blue Hymnal #5]  Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,

And with fear and trembling stand;

Ponder nothing earthly-minded,

For with blessing in His hand,

Christ our God to earth descendeth,

Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,

As of old on earth He stood,

Lord of lords, in human vesture,

In the body and the blood;

He will give to all the faithful His own self for heav’nly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven

Spreads its vanguard on the way,

As the Light of light descendeth

From the realms of endless day,

That the pow’rs of hell may vanish

As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six-winged seraph,

Cherubim with sleepless eye,

Veil their faces to the presence,

As with ceaseless voice they cry:

“Alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia, Lord Most High!”

*PARTING PRAYER

Glory to you, O God: you have won victory over death, raising Jesus from the grave and giving us eternal life. Glory to you, O Christ: for us and for our salvation you have overcome death and opened the gate to everlasting life. Glory to you, O Holy Spirit: you lead us into the truth. Glory to you, O Blessed Trinity, now and forever. Amen.

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON                                              Luke 9:43b-50

And all were astounded at the greatness of God.

While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, ‘Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.’ But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.’

John answered, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.’

ANTHEM      Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel arr. Lloyd Larson

SECOND LESSON                                        Philippians 1:1-18a

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus,

To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God’s grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

I want you to know, beloved, that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ; and most of the brothers and sisters, having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, dare to speak the word with greater boldness and without fear.

Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel; the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice.

RECOGNTION of GRADUATES

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Theological Declaration of Barmen:

Jesus Christ, as he is attested for us in Holy Scripture, is the one Word of God which we have to hear and which we have to trust and obey in life and in death.

As Jesus Christ is God’s assurance of the forgiveness of all our sins, so in the same way and with the same seriousness is he also God’s mighty claim upon our whole life. Through him befalls us a joyful deliverance from the godless fetters of this world for a free, grateful service to his Creatures.

The Christian Church is the congregation of the brethren in which Jesus Christ acts presently as the Lord in Word and Sacrament through the Holy Spirit. As the church of pardoned sinners, it has to testify in the midst of a sinful world, with its faith as with its obedience, with its message as with its order, that it is solely his property, and that it lives and wants to live solely from his comfort and from his direction in the expectation of his appearance.

The various offices in the church do not establish a dominion of some over the others; on the contrary, they are for the exercise of the ministry entrusted to and enjoined upon the whole congregation.

The church’s commission, upon which its freedom is founded, consists in delivering the message of the free grace of God to all people in Christ’s stead, and therefore in the ministry of his own Word and work through sermon and Sacrament.

*HYMN [Blue Hymnal #419]  How Clear is Our Vocation Lord

How clear is our vocation, Lord,

When once we heed your call:

To live according to your word,

And daily learn, refreshed, restored,

That you are Lord of all,

and will not let us fall.

But if, forgetful, we should find

Your yoke is hard to bear;

If worldly pressures fray the mind,

and love itself cannot unwind

Its tangled skein of care:

Our inward life repair.

We mark Your saints, how they became

In hindrances more sure;

Whose joyful virtues put to shame

The casual way we wear your name,

And by our faults obscure

Your power to cleanse and cure.

In what you give us, Lord, to do,

Together or alone,

In old routines or ventures new,

May we not cease to look to you,

The cross you hung upon –

All you endeavored done.

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON                                                                  John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

ANTHEM            “Cantate Domino” by Hassler, arr. Schroth

SECOND LESSON                                                        Acts 17:16-34

While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed to see that the city was full of idols. So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and also in the market-place every day with those who happened to be there. Also some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers debated with him. Some said, ‘What does this babbler want to say?’ Others said, ‘He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign divinities.’ (This was because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.) So they took him and brought him to the Areopagus and asked him, ‘May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? It sounds rather strange to us, so we would like to know what it means.’ Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.
Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, ‘Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god.” What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us. For “In him we live and move and have our being”; as even some of your own poets have said,
“For we too are his offspring.”
Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.’
When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed; but others said, ‘We will hear you again about this.’ At that point Paul left them. But some of them joined him and became believers, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN  Here in This Place

WORDS OF WELCOME

PRELUDE “You Raise Me Up”

Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland

ADORATION

CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. 7:17

ONE: The Lamb of God will be our shepherd;

MANY: He will guide us to the water of life.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, you sent Jesus, our good shepherd, to gather us together. May we not wander from his flock, but follow wherever he leads us, listening for his voice and staying near him, until we are safely in your fold, to live with you forever; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

*HYMN     “Sing a New Song unto the Lord”     SING A NEW SONG

Sing a new song unto the Lord;

let your song be sung from mountains high.

Sing a new song unto the Lord, singing hallelujah!

  1. Shout with gladness! Dance for joy!

O come before the Lord.

And play for God on glad tambourines,

and let your trumpet sound.

  1. Rise, O children, from your sleep;

your Savior now has come.

He has turned your sorrow into joy,

and filled your soul with song.

  1. 3. Glad my soul for I have seen the glory of the Lord.

The trumpet sounds; the dead shall be raised.

I know my Savior lives.

CONFESSION

CALL TO CONFESSION

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor first in a moment of silence, then together.

SILENT CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, in raising Jesus from the grave, you shattered the power of sin and death. We confess that we remain captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We overlook the poor and the hungry, and pass by those who mourn; we are deaf to the cries of the oppressed, and indifferent to calls for peace; we despise the weak, and abuse the earth you made.

Forgive us, God of mercy. Help us to trust your power to change our lives and make us new, that we may know the joy of life abundant given in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. Amen

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Hear the good news! Who is in a position to condemn? Only Christ, and Christ died for us, Christ rose for us, Christ reigns in power for us, Christ prays for us. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen.

DECLARATION of FORGIVENESS

ONE: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

MANY: Thanks be to God!

*GLORIA PATRI #579

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end, Amen, Amen.

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON                                           1 Cor. 13: 4-7

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

ANTHEM   We Are All God’s Children      Brahms, arr. Ziegenhals

SECOND LESSON                                      Proverbs 31 : 10, 15 – 31

A good woman is hard to find,

and worth far more than diamonds.

She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family

 and organizing her day.

She looks over a field and buys it,

 then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden.

First thing in the morning, she dresses for work,

rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.

She senses the worth of her work,

and is in no hurry to call it quits for the day.

She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth,

 diligent in homemaking.

She’s quick to assist anyone in need,

 and reaches out to help the poor.

She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows;

their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.

She makes her own clothing,

 and dresses in colorful linens and silks.

Her husband is greatly respected

when he deliberates with the city fathers.

She designs gowns and sells them,

 brings the sweaters she knits to the dress shops.

Her clothes are well-made and elegant,

and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.

When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say,

and she always says it kindly.

She keeps an eye on everyone in her household,

and keeps them all busy and productive.

Her children respect and bless her;

her husband joins in with words of praise:

“Many women have done wonderful things,

 but you’ve outclassed them all!”

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.

 The woman to be admired and praised

 is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.

Give her everything she deserves!

 Festoon her life with praises!

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON                       Woman of Valor Rev. Ochart

 RESPONSE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Heidelberg Catechism 4.001

ONE: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?

MANY: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

RECEIVING OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY               “Clouds”

*DOXOLOGY

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Praise God, in Jesus fully known:

Creator, Word, and Spirit one.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Amen.

*HYMN [Blue # 376] Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Love divine, all loves excelling,

joy of heav’n, to earth come down,

fix in us thy humble dwelling,

all thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

pure, unbounded love thou art.

Visit us with thy salvation;

enter ev’ry trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit

into ev’ry troubled breast.

Let us all in thee inherit,

let us find the promised rest.

Take away the love of sinning;

Alpha and Omega be.

End of faith, as its beginning,

set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty, to deliver,

let us all thy life receive.

Suddenly return, and never,

nevermore they temples leave.

Thee we would be always blessing,

serve thee as thy hosts above,

pray, and praise thee without ceasing,

glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation;

Pure and spotless let us be.

Let us see thy great salvation

perfectly restored in thee.

Changed from glory into glory,

till in heav’n we take our place,

till we cast our crowns before thee,

lost in wonder, love and praise.

Amen.

SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

2nd Sunday of Easter

April 24th, Ten Thirty in the morning

Minister: Rev. Dr. Martha Robson

Liturgist: Lynne Sens

Please silence all cell phones.

Bold face indicates congregational participation.

* Please stand, in body or spirit

GATHERING

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN      Here in This Place       Gather Us In

  1. Here in this place, new light is streaming, now is the darkness

vanished away; See, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,

brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in – the lost and forsaken, gather us in

the blind and the lame; Call to us now, and we shall awaken,

we shall arise at the sound of our name.

  1. We are the young – our lives are a mystery, we are the old who yearn for your face. We have been sung throughout all of history,

called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in – the rich and the haughty, gather us in  the

proud and the strong; Give us a heart so meek and so lowly;

give us the courage to enter the song.

  1. Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth. Here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth.

Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the

bread that is you. Nourish us well, and teach us to fashion

lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

  1. Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven, light years a-way:  here in this place, the new light is shining;

now is the Kingdom, and now is the day.

Gather us in – and hold us forever, gather us in – and

 make us your own. Gather us in – all peoples together,

fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

DECLARATION of FORGIVENESS

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON                                            Rev. 1: 1-8

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place; he made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of the prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it; for the time is near.

John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Look! He is coming with the clouds;

   every eye will see him,

even those who pierced him;

   and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail.

So it is to be. Amen.

‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

ANTHEM The Glories of Christ Tom Fettke and Thomas Grassi

SECOND LESSON                                    John 20:19-31

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON

RESPONSE

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed: BOC 1.1-3

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again, in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for you.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

*HYMN Blue # 151      Crown Him With Many Crowns

1 Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne;

Hark, how the heavenly anthem drowns All music but its own!

Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee,

And hail Him as thy matchless King Through all eternity.

2 Crown Him the Lord of love; Behold His hands and side,

Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified:

No angel in the sky Can fully bear that sight,

But downward bends his burning eye At mysteries so bright.

3 Crown Him the Lord of peace; Whose power a scepter sways

From pole to pole, that wars may cease, Absorbed in prayer and praise:

His reign shall know no end; And round His piercèd feet

Fair flowers of paradise extend Their fragrance ever sweet.

4 Crown Him the Lord of years, The Potentate of time;

Creator of the rolling spheres, Ineffably sublime.

All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me;

Thy praise shall never, never fail Throughout eternity.

Order of Worship Good Friday 4-15

GOOD FRIDAY

April 15, 2022 Seven O’Clock in the Evening

Minister: The Rev. Aaron Ochart

Please silence all cell phones.

Bold face indicates congregational participation.

* Please stand, in body or spirit

GATHERING

*OPENING SENTENCES   (1 Peter 2:24)

ONE: Christ Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross so that we might not die to sin and live for righteousness.

MANY: Blessed is the name of the Lord.

*PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, look with mercy on your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed and be given over to the hands of sinners, and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

*HYMN      “My Song is Love Unknown”      LOVE UNKNOWN

  1. My Song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me,

love to the loveless shown

that they might lovely be.

O who am I, that for my sake

My Lord should take frail flesh and die.

  1. He came from heaven’s throne salvation to bestow;

the world that was his own

would not its Savior know.

But O, my Friend, my Friend indeed,

who at my need his life did spend!

  1. Sometimes we strew his way,

and his sweet praises sing,

resounding all the day hosannas to our King.

Then “Crucify!” is all our breath,

and for his death we thirst and cry.

  1. 4. Unheeding, we will have

our dear Lord made a way,

a murderer to save, the prince of life to slay.

Yet steadfast he to suffering goes,

that he his foes from thence might free.

  1. 5. Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine:

never was love, dear King,

never was grief like thine.

This is my Friend, in whose sweet praise

I all my days could gladly spend.

PROCLAMATION

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON                                                John 18:1-27

HYMN 97       “Go to Dark Gethsemane”     REDHEAD 76

  1. Go to dark Gethsemane,

all who feel the tempter’s power;

your Redeemer’s conflict see;

watch with him one bitter hour;

turn not from your griefs away;

learn from Jesus Christ to pray.

  1. Follow to the judgment hall;

view the Lord of life arraigned;

O the wormwood and the and the gall!

O the pangs his soul sustained!

Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;

learn from him to bear the cross.

  1. Calvary’s mournful mountain climb;

there adoring at his feet,

mark that miracle of time,

God’s own sacrifice complete;

“It is finished!” hear him cry.

Learn from Jesus Christ to die.

SECOND LESSON                        John 18:28-19:16a

HYMN 101    “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”          HAMBURG

  1. When I survey the wondrous cross

on which the Prince of glory died,

my richest gain I count as loss,

and pour contempt on all my pride.

  1. See, from his head, his hands, his feet,

sorrow and love flow mingled down;

did e’er such love and sorrow meet,

or thorns compose so rich a crown.

THIRD LESSON                             John 19:16b-30

HYMN 78       “Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed”           MARTYRDOM

  1. Alas! and did my Savior bleed,

and did my Sovereign die!

Would he devote that sacred head

for sinners such as I!

  1. Was it for sins that I have done

he suffered on the tree?

Amazing pity! Grace unknown!

And love beyond degree!

  1. Well might the sun in darkness hide

and shut its glories in,

when Christ the great Redeemer died,

for human creatures’ sin.

  1. But drops of grief can ne’er repay

the debt of love I owe;

here, Lord, I give myself away;

‘tis all that I can do.

THE SOLEMN INTERCESSION

…Lord we ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THIRD LESSON                         John 19:31-37

HYMN                “Were You There?”

  1. Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

O! Sometimes it causes me to tremble,

tremble, tremble.

Were you there

when they crucified my Lord?

  1. Were you there

when they nailed him to the tree?

  1. Were you there

when they pierced him in the side?

  1. Were you there

when the sun refused to shine?

  1. Were you there

when they laid him in a tomb?

FOURTH LESSON                      John 19:38-42

SOLEMN REPROACHES OF THE CROSS

ONE: This is the cross

that held the Savior of the world.

MANY: Come, Let us Worship God. (3x)

…Holy God

Holy and mighty,

Holy immortal One,

have mercy on us.
